You can’t stop thinking about him. You check his Instagram. You re-read old texts. You replay every conversation, trying to figure out what went wrong. He’s not texting. He’s not calling. He’s barely even showing up and yet somehow, he lives rent-free in your head, 24 hours a day.

As a dating coach for women and relationship coach for women who has spent over a decade helping thousands of women around the world attract healthy, committed love, I see this pattern constantly. Women who are smart, successful, beautiful, absolutely extraordinary by every measure, pouring all of their energy into men who are simply not that into them.

In this article, I’m going to walk you through exactly why you’re obsessed with a man who doesn’t like you, what childhood wounds are fueling it, and most importantly, how to take your power back.

This is the same work we do inside my flagship online relationship coaching program, Elevate, and it has helped hundreds of women go from heartbreak and obsession to attracting the deep, lasting love they deserve.

What Does It Mean to Be Obsessed With a Man?

Let’s start with what feeling obsessed with somebody actually is. At its core, it’s simply giving an undue amount of mind space and headspace to a man, especially one who is not giving you the attention, communication, or time that you deserve.

You find yourself:

  • Checking his social media multiple times a day
  • Analyzing his WhatsApp last-seen status
  • Replaying conversations looking for clues
  • Texting and calling more than feels good to you
  • Living in a fantasy of who you could be together

The less effort he makes, the more obsessed you become. This is not a coincidence, there is a very specific psychological reason this happens, and once you understand it, everything starts to make sense.

Why Am I Obsessed With a Man Who Doesn’t Want Me? The Real Reason

Here’s the truth that most dating advice never tells you: if you are obsessing over a man who isn’t choosing you, your love-choosing compass is off.

A woman with a healthy sense of self-esteem and a strong love compass naturally gets disinterested in men who don’t make an effort for her. When a man doesn’t text back, doesn’t show up, or doesn’t invest in getting to know her, she moves on. Not because she’s playing games, but because her self-worth is intact.

But when your love compass has been shaped by childhood experiences of emotional unavailability or absence, a very different pattern emerges. When a man doesn’t show up for you, instead of getting disinterested, you feel compelled to try harder.

This is the pattern that spells disaster even for the most amazing women. And it’s exactly what we heal inside Elevate, my signature online coaching program for single women and for women in relationships. You can book a free call with one of my senior coaches and we will assess how we can help you to create love life of your dreams.

Here’s something important to consider: if you find yourself obsessing over a man who is not emotionally present for you, it is quite likely that you are also emotionally unavailable yourself at some level. What does that mean? It means you are living in your head, creating beautiful stories about what this relationship could be, who you could be together, how amazing it would feel if he just turned around and paid attention to you.

But here’s the hard truth: none of it is going on in real life. It is a fantasy.

And this fantasy is actually a form of emotional unavailability. When you are emotionally unavailable, a man who is fully ready to commit to you feels scary and intimidating. So instead, you pour your energy into someone who is emotionally absent, because that matches your own inner world.

That’s why In Elevate we start with deep inner work, not just dating tactics, and the results of my clients have been incredible:

The 3 Childhood Wounds Driving Your Obsession

When a man is not present for you in a healthy way, he triggers something much deeper than disappointment, he triggers your childhood wounds.

Inside my online dating coaching programs and across my work as a women’s dating and relationship coach, I see three wounds come up again and again in this dynamic:

The Wound of Abandonment

When a man doesn’t text, doesn’t call, or pulls away, the wound of abandonment is activated. The inner voice sounds like:

  • “Are you going to leave me?”
  • “If you leave, I won’t survive it.”
  • “I need you. I need you. I need you.”

This is what drives the obsessive checking of his Instagram and compulsive texting. It’s not really about him, it’s the terror of abandonment that was wired into you long before he came along. This is one of the most powerful themes in relationship coaching for singles and the first area we address in Elevate.

The Wound of Rejection

When a man is not that into you, it can feel devastatingly personal. The inner voice sounds like:

  • “Am I not beautiful enough?”
  • “Am I not smart enough?”
  • “Am I not young enough?”
  • “Why doesn’t he move towards me?”

Here’s what I want you to hear clearly: a man’s actions toward you mean nothing about your worth. But when the wound of rejection is active, it feels completely personal and that feeling drives us to pursue, chase, and obsess.

The Wound of Not Being Good Enough

This wound is closely related to rejection. When someone doesn’t choose us, the deepest fear whispers: “I am not enough.”

The belief  that his disinterest is evidence of your lack of worth is one of the most painful and most common patterns I work with as a love coach for women.  Once these wounds are activated, we become like little helpless girls who cannot emotionally self-regulate. We keep getting drawn back to what feels familiar, even when it’s causing us pain.

Why It’s So Hard to Stop: The Addiction Loop

You might be wondering: if this is so painful, why can’t I just stop? You can’t stop because it is genuinely addictive.

When we obsess over someone who gives us inconsistent attention, our brain responds similarly to how it responds to a gambling addiction. The occasional moment of connection, a text back, a warm look, a moment of closeness, becomes a hit of dopamine that keeps you hooked.

Add to that the activation of deep childhood wounds, and you have a powerful neurological and emotional cocktail that is very hard to walk away from simply through willpower.

This is why healing this pattern requires inner work, not just discipline. It is why my online relationship coaching program dedicates entire modules to this exact journey.

The Connection Between Obsession and Self-Abandonment

Obsessing over a man who is not into you is an act of deep self-abandonment.

Pay attention: this person and their absence keeps making you miserable. But somehow, you keep gifting them all your attention, all your energy, all your headspace.

But be honest with yourself and ask yourself this question: if you loved yourself deeply, if you truly liked yourself, believed in your worth, and knew you deserved better, would you be spending your time this way?

This is not about blame, it’s about healing. And it is the heart of Module 2 of Elevate:  healing your heart through self-love and self-worth, and cultivating that unshakeable sense of: “I am enough.”

How to Stop Obsessing: What Actually Works

As a dating coach for successful women trusted by thousands of clients in 50+ countries, here is what I know truly works:

Step 1: Name What’s Really Happening

You are not just missing him. You are in the grip of old wounds that are being triggered by his absence. When you can name this “my abandonment wound is activated right now”, you gain a tiny bit of distance from the spiral.

Step 2: Take Your Power Back

No man holds the key to your self-respect. No man holds the key to your happiness. Not this one, not any of them.

Every time you check his Instagram, you give him your power. Every time you send an anxious text, you give him more. Taking your power back means pulling your energy inward: back to yourself, your life, your joy.

Step 3: Do the Inner Work

This is where the magic happens. Healing the wounds of abandonment, rejection, and not being enough is the work that changes everything. This is relationship coaching at its deepest level, and it is what separates women who repeat patterns from women who attract something genuinely different.

Inside Elevate, we call this the Love Success Framework, a polarity-based foundation where women heal their self-worth and embody their feminine energy to attract healthy, empowered masculine men.

I can give you the support on this journey of healing yourself and attracting the love you dream about. Book a complimentary love strategy call with the Elevate team here (it’s a limited offer, so only available until it lasts!).

Step 4: Choose Yourself

Soulmate love and healthy love feels good. It feels safe. It feels warm. It feels like coming home.

Every time you find yourself in a painful dynamic, the question to ask is not: “What is wrong with me? Why can’t I get him to give me what I want?”

The question is: “Why am I putting up with this? I deserve better. I deserve a man who is into me.”
