One of the most common struggles I hear from my clients is about setting boundaries in dating. How do you stand up for your needs and values without coming across as cold, difficult, or, worst of all, scaring men away? This used to be one of my biggest challenges, too, and I want to share with you what I’ve learned through personal experience and the decade long transformative coaching work I´ve done with thousands of women by now.

  • My Journey to Healthy Boundaries

I’ll be honest: I wasn’t always good at setting boundaries. In my early dating days, I often found myself saying yes when I meant no, giving too much of my time and energy to someone who hadn’t yet earned it, or avoiding difficult conversations out of fear they’d leave. Sound familiar?

I’ll never forget one particular relationship. I was dating a guy who seemed perfect on the surface—kind, funny, and attentive. But there was one issue: he often canceled our plans last minute. I’d rearrange my schedule, get excited to see him, only to receive a casual text: “Something came up. Let’s reschedule.”

At first, I told myself to be understanding. But as it happened more often, I felt a knot of resentment growing inside me. I wanted to address it but was terrified he’d think I was “too much” or “too demanding.” So, I kept quiet. Unsurprisingly, the relationship fizzled out, and I was left feeling disrespected and undervalued.

That experience was a wake-up call. I realized that not setting boundaries didn’t just hurt me; it also set a poor tone for the relationship. It was then that I decided to take control and learn how to set boundaries effectively—and it changed everything.

And if I WOULD like to see this person again, that leads to our second goal…
  • Getting Date #2

This is where, in the Wunder work, we get more strategic.

We want to increase the chances of spending time with the right people in dating. When we like a man, we definitely want to increase the chances of seeing him again!

So, what’s the Wunder strategy?

In order to create a positive experience both for yourself and the man you’re seeing on the first date, you should avoid certain topics and focus on others.

So here’s what you should (and shouldn’t!) talk about on your first date.

What Are Boundaries, and Why Do They Matter in Dating?

Boundaries are simply the limits you set for yourself to protect your emotional well-being and values. They’re not about controlling the other person but about showing them how to treat you.

Healthy boundaries help you:

Communicate your needs clearly and confidently

Build mutual respect in the relationship.

Avoid resentment or burnout from overgiving.

When you set boundaries, you’re essentially saying, “This is what I need to feel safe and respected. Can you meet me here?”

Common Myths About Boundaries in Dating

Many of us resist setting boundaries because of misconceptions like:

“Men will think I’m difficult or needy.”

In reality, people respect those who respect themselves. A partner worth having will appreciate your clarity.

“I’ll scare men away.”

If someone is scared off by your boundaries, they’re not the right person for you.

“Setting boundaries means being confrontational.”

Boundaries can be expressed kindly and calmly—it’s not about drama.

How to Set Boundaries Without Pushing Them Away

Here’s the approach I’ve developed that’s worked for me and countless clients:

#1 Get Clear on Your Non-Negotiables

Before you can set boundaries, you need to know what matters most to you. Ask yourself:

What behaviors make me feel disrespected?

What am I unwilling to compromise on?

What do I need to feel safe and valued in a relationship?

For example, one of my non-negotiables is consistent communication. If someone can’t prioritize replying to my texts or calls within a reasonable timeframe, I know it’s a dealbreaker.

#2 Start With “I” Statements

When communicating a boundary, frame it as your need rather than their failure. This avoids putting them on the defensive.

Instead of: “You never make time for me!”

Try: “I feel valued when we spend quality time together. Can we plan something consistent?”

This shows you’re coming from a place of love and desire for connection, not blame.

#3 Be Firm Yet Flexible

Setting boundaries isn’t about being rigid or uncompromising. It’s okay to adjust as long as the core principle remains intact.

For example, if your partner can’t call every day but makes an effort to check in every other day, that might work for you.

#4 Follow Through

Boundaries mean nothing if you don’t enforce them. If someone repeatedly disrespects your boundary despite clear communication, it’s a sign they may not be the right match for you.

I remember dating someone who was habitually late. After I expressed how it made me feel and he didn’t change, I had to walk away. It was hard but empowering.

#4 Don’t Apologize for Your Needs

You deserve to be treated with respect, and setting boundaries is a vital part of that. Never feel guilty for prioritizing your well-being.

One of the most profound shifts I’ve experienced is leaning into my feminine energy when setting boundaries. Feminine energy is about being receptive, authentic, and confident in your worth.

For instance, instead of demanding, “Why don’t you ever plan dates?” I’ve learned to express my desire: “I feel so special when you plan something for us. It makes me feel cherished.”

This approach invites your partner to rise to meet your needs without feeling pressured. Check out my Feminine Energy Checklist Here

One of my clients, Megan, came to me struggling with a partner who constantly canceled plans. She felt unimportant but was afraid to speak up. Through coaching, she learned to express her feelings and set clear expectations. Her partner not only stepped up but started planning dates in advance to ensure she felt valued.

Another client, Jessica, realized she was overgiving in her relationships—always saying yes to last-minute requests or sacrificing her needs. By learning to say no and set limits, she attracted a partner who respected her time and effort.

Boundaries are not about creating distance; they’re about fostering deeper, healthier connections.
