If you've been asking yourself why won't he commit, why won't he propose, or why a man who seems so wonderful just won't take the next step, this article is going to give you the real answer.
I'm sure so many women out there have had the experience where a guy gets cold feet when it comes to putting the ring on the finger. I've been a dating and relationship coach for high-achieving women for over 10 years. So many gorgeous, sincere, successful women who join my programs come to me with this question: why won’t he propose?
The BBC and the Daily Mail called me the “Get the Ring” coach back in 2018, because I understood once and for all that until you have a ring on your finger, it is not real commitment. And inside my online relationship coaching program for women, Elevate, I have helped hundreds and hundreds of women get there.
In this article, I want to talk to you about the male psychology behind why men resist commitment, including a conversation I had with my own husband Chris that was so eye-opening I recorded it on the spot. Let's get into it.
Exclusivity Is NOT the Same as Commitment, And This Is Critical
Before we talk about why men fear commitment, I need to get very clear on something. There is a massive, costly confusion that keeps most women stuck, and it starts with the girlfriend title.
When I talk about men getting cold feet or resisting commitment, I am not talking about a man asking you to be his girlfriend.
If you understand my work, what I have found is that the girlfriend title is actually quite an easy thing for a man to offer a woman, because it gets you off the market. It ensures that he has no competition. It gets you committed to him emotionally, and he gets access to your assets. So the girlfriend title is, in my work, no great reward.
In fact, inside Elevate, we tell our clients to keep postponing exclusivity as much as possible. Because it really is in the first few weeks or months where we are on a high with the love, where we are excited about the girlfriend title. But when the honeymoon phase drops down, then you become really clear on whether this man is truly in love with you, he wants to wife you, or he just girlfriended you for the sake of convenience and for the sake of having access to your assets.
By the way, if you are curious about Elevate and want personalized support in your own love life, you can book a complimentary Love Strategy Session with one of my senior coaches. It’s a free 1-on-1 call, no strings attached. Click here to book.
So to define commitment properly: commitment is not just exclusivity or just being his girlfriend.
When I talk about commitment, I talk about you being the one for him. I talk about a man who falls in love with you and who would literally go as far as getting himself killed if he had to do that in the process of protecting you. We are talking about a deep bond. We are talking about the kind of relationship where he decides once and for all: you are the one. The one he is going to become vulnerable for. The one he is going to invest his time, energy, money, and resources in. You are going to be the love of his life.

And this is the kind of commitment most women struggle to attract. It is not so difficult to attract exclusivity, if you are a woman who looks after herself, you will have options. It will not be a big deal to have a few men ask you to be their girlfriend by date three, four, or five. But that is not what we want for our clients.
In the Sami Wunder world, what we want is earth-shattering romance, love of a kind where you know you found the one, and he knows you are the one.

Why Men Resist Commitment: The Fear of Losing Freedom
So why won't he commit? Why do men get cold feet about marriage even when everything seems to be going well? Here is the answer, and it came straight from a breakfast conversation with my husband Chris that was so incredible, I grabbed my phone and recorded it on the spot.
Chris said to me: “Sami, we men really value our freedom. And while we would love a beautiful woman that we can be with, committing to you and really putting a ring on your finger and saying ‘this is it' feels like a major threat to our freedom.”
He talked about how commitment goes anti-freedom. It feels like locking yourself down. It feels like never again being able to go out and flirt, go out and party, never being able to sleep with another woman. And that goes against the evolutionary instinct of men.

Whether we like to hear it or not, from an evolutionary psychology perspective, the male of the species is not wired for commitment. Their goal is that the human race doesn't go extinct, so let's make children, let's have sex. And when a man has to put a ring on a woman's finger, that is the primal fear he has to encounter.
This is part one of the answer to why men resist commitment. And it shows up even in wonderful, loving, high-quality men who genuinely care about you. It is not personal. It is primal.
The Second Reason Men Won't Commit: The Responsibility That Comes With You
Here is the second piece of the puzzle, and this one is just as important when understanding why men pull away from commitment.
When men are resisting commitment, they are resisting the responsibility that will come on them once they choose you as wife, once they choose you as the forever person, the fiancée. Because every man knows: women have needs, women have requirements, women have feelings, if they are an evolved woman with self-worth.
And who wants that? Who wants to give up their freedom and increase their level of responsibility towards another human being? What the unevolved, unawakened part within a man wants is having it easy. He wants the girl. He wants the benefits. He wants access to her feminine energy. But marriage is permanent and his ego does not like that, it brings up all kinds of fears within him.
A Real Client Example From Inside Elevate
Recently, we had a client in Elevate whose partner, with whom they were not yet engaged, wanted her to come visit his sports club for an entire month. He would love for her to be there. And she said to me: “Sami, that's not very exciting for me.”
And I told her: yes, he is trying to see if you fit into his life. But remember, he also has to understand that the woman is going to have needs. If he just wants to play sports all day and hopes you will sit in the hotel waiting, that is not a realistic expectation.
Women have needs, requirements and feelings. When men are resisting commitment, that is exactly what they are resisting: the responsibility that comes with a real woman who has self-worth.

Of course, there are many women out there who simply become the convenient option., and they often get the guy. But they end up in miserable relationships, because they got him by being convenient, and now their needs do not matter. Only what he wants matters.
But if we are looking to attract an aligned relationship and to create a deep emotional bond with a man, the truth is he has to accept that we have needs and feelings, we will get disappointed, we will need his attention and his time, and we will need his emotional availability. And that is the thing men are resisting.
Yes, He Is Wonderful, But He Still Won't Propose. Here's Why.
This is for those of you who have often wondered: why is it that my man is so wonderful, so lovely, the connection is so genuine, but he just doesn’t propose?
This is happening not because something is wrong with you as a woman, but because nothing in the dynamic is emotionally compelling him to choose you permanently.
It is a myth, and a limiting belief that is propagated in society, that a long-term relationship automatically leads to a proposal. It is a myth that is serving the masculine. It serves men because they get to lock you down under the illusion that this is going to be long-term. And then you as a woman start to build a kind of family structure with him, hoping that that will inspire him to step up and put the ring on your finger.
It often does not. And that is why this conversation matters so much.
If you find yourself in this situation, and you are wondering what to do next, start with my Love Blocks Quiz. I have a special version created for women in relationships. After taking the quiz, you’ll understand what is stopping you from growing the emotional connection and reigniting his passion. Click here to take the Quiz, it’s free.
How to Make a Man Commit: What Actually Works
Here is the truth about how to get a commitment from a man, and it is probably not what you have been told elsewhere.
There are specific ways we show our clients inside Elevate how to show up in the relationship so that it increases his attraction to a level where his emotion for you and his connection for you and his feelings for you beat his logical fears.
And then no more arguments like this will arise:
- “I have to wait until I make more money.”
- “I need to get a promotion first.”
- “Everything is so good, why change it?”
- “What's the hurry?”
All of this goes away. Because when you start showing up as the woman that he finds irresistible, the emotion he feels for you will override his logic. His fears may be completely logical, it might actually be true and logical that he needs to make more money before getting married, or getting a promotion, or building a house. But emotion is more powerful than logic, and the work we do inside Elevate is emotional. That is why our clients attract the love of their lives.
We are not about helping you attract another guy who then disappears in seven months. It is better for our clients to take a little longer than to settle for a less-than relationship.
What This Work Actually Looks Like
For me, as a women's relationship coach, helping a client get the ring is not some kind of masculine, pushy pursuit of a proposal. For me, it is actually a deep spiritual work that the woman does, where she:
- Lets go of control and steps fully into her feminine energy
- Deeply inspires the masculine heart to step up for her
- Shows up in a way that makes his emotion for her beat every logical fear
- Stops being the convenient option and starts being the irresistible one
- Communicates her needs and feelings from a place of self-worth, not resentment

Because trust me, for those of you who have had intimacy fears, those of you who have been single for some time and get scared when a guy gets close, you also have fears. You have fears of making a bad choice and ruining your entire life. You have fears of how you will have to adjust your schedule and your life with somebody else. Men have all of those fears too. It is just that as women, you at least show up in Elevate and do the work. Most men I know do not go to a program like Elevate, even though I wish they would, because they would grow up with the inner work so much faster.
You Deserve Earth-Shattering Love, Not Just a Convenient Relationship

Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't he commit?
Men resist commitment for two primary reasons: the fear of losing personal freedom, and the fear of the increased responsibility that comes with choosing a woman as a permanent life partner. From an evolutionary psychology perspective, men are not naturally wired for commitment. When a man has to say “this is it, forever”, he confronts a primal fear. The good news is that when the emotional connection is deep and compelling enough, those fears can and do get overridden.
Why do men want a girlfriend but not a wife?
The girlfriend title is easy to offer, it gets a woman emotionally committed and off the market, gives him access to her time, energy, and feminine energy, with minimal permanent responsibility. Real commitment requires a man to accept that a woman has needs, requirements, and feelings that he is fully and permanently responsible for. That leap is what many men avoid, often for years.
Why is my boyfriend not proposing?
Either he is not emotionally compelled enough yet, meaning there is specific work to do in how you are showing up in the relationship, or he is not a man who is ready for or interested in real commitment. A qualified relationship coach for women like Sami Wunder can help you understand which one is true in your situation, and what the next right step is.
What does commitment mean to a man?
To a man, real commitment means choosing one woman as his forever person, becoming vulnerable for her, investing his full time, energy, money, and emotional availability in her, and accepting permanently that her needs and feelings matter. This is very different from exclusivity, which is simply agreeing not to date others.
How long should you wait for a man to commit?
There is no magic number, but there is a principle: waiting longer without anything changing is not a strategy. If you have been together for over a year and there is no movement toward real commitment, it is time to do the deeper work, not by issuing ultimatums, but by understanding what is actually happening emotionally and whether the dynamic needs to shift.
How do I make a man commit?
The most effective path is emotional, not logical. Inside Elevate, we show women how to show up so that their man's feelings for them beat every logical fear he has. When you become the woman he simply does not want to lose, commitment follows naturally. That is the process, and it works.
